Maryland starts with 22-4 rout

Twelve players scored as the third-seeded Maryland defeated Temple, 22-4, in the first round of the NCAA Division I women's lacrosse tournament yesterday in College Park.

Maryland (15-4) advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will face Georgetown, which defeated Duke, 13-12, in overtime yesterday.

The Terps' Kelly Coppedge led all scorers with five goals and two assists.

No. 2 Virginia 19, Mount St. Mary's 2: The second-seeded Cavaliers (16-3) cruised past the visiting Mountaineers in a first-round game.

Virginia scored six times in the opening 11:35 and advanced to play Northwestern, a 10-8 winner over Notre Dame.
