Maryland starts with 22-4 rout

Twelve Terps scored as third-seeded Maryland defeated Temple, 22-4, in the first round of the NCAA Division I women's lacrosse tournament yesterday in College Park.

Maryland (15-4) advanced to the quarterfinals against Georgetown, which defeated Duke, 13-12, in overtime.

The Terps' Kelly Coppedge led all scorers with five goals and two assists.

No. 2 Virginia 19, Mount St. Mary's 2: The second-seeded Cavaliers (16-3) cruised past the visiting Mountaineers in a first-round game.

Virginia scored six times in the opening 11:35 and advanced to play Northwestern, a 10-8 winner over Notre Dame.

Mount St. Mary's finished with a school-best 15-5 record.
