Funeral procession for state trooper to force road closures

May 14, 2004

A funeral for Maryland State Police Tfc. Anthony Jones - who was struck and killed by a van Sunday as he assisted at an accident scene near Bowie - will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore.

After the service, from about noon to 2 p.m., traffic is expected to be congested along the funeral procession route from the church at 5601 N. Charles St. to Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens. An estimated 800 cars are expected, including representatives from police departments across Maryland and from other states.

The procession's route will be south on Charles, west on Northern Parkway, north on Interstate 83 and east on Padonia Road to the cemetery. State police say they will briefly close roads as the procession passes.

Additionally, North Charles Street will be closed from Lake Avenue to Northern Parkway from 6:30 a.m. until about noon.

Jones, a 50-year-old resident of Montgomery County and father of two teen-age girls, was the 39th trooper to die in the line of duty. A Laurel man has been charged in the incident.
