May 11, 2004

Stella Matthews, a retired nursing assistant, died of emphysema Sunday at Sinai Hospital. The Northwest Baltimore resident was 73.

She was born Stella Franklin in Enfield, N.C., and was raised in Emporia, Va. She came to Baltimore in 1963 from Virginia Beach, where she had worked as a housekeeper for many years. She later was a private duty nursing assistant until retiring in 1994.

Mrs. Matthews was a member of Chapter 28 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Fulton Baptist Church. She liked traveling and family cookouts.

"She loved to cook and would invite family and friends to big cookouts that she held in her yard," said a sister, Lena Carter of Baltimore. "She especially liked making spare ribs and chicken."

Mrs. Matthews was married for 25 years to Otis Matthews, a steel worker who died in 1998.

Funeral plans were incomplete yesterday.

She is survived by a son, Vernon Ferebee of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Thomas Franklin of Rockaway, N.Y., and Leonard Franklin of Baltimore; another sister, Mary Lambert of Queens, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
