When the word on the playground is that there's a birthday party in town, no one wants to hear the words "You're not invited." But kids of all ages are welcome at Port Discovery's Fifth Birthday Beagle Bash Saturday, where they can expect to rub elbows with all their favorite characters from the Peanuts gang, including Charlie Brown, Lucy and, of course, Snoopy.

Named one of the top 10 children's museums by Child magazine in 2002, Port Discovery has made a name for itself as Baltimore's kid-powered museum. And as it hits the five-year mark, a grand celebration is definitely in order. The Peanuts gang arrived in January as a part of the traveling exhibit Good Grief! a fun-loving ode to the work of the late cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, who created the popular comic strip more than 50 years ago.

Everyone is invited to become a part of the cartoon panels by viewing a collection of his cartoon art or by helping Woodstock weave a nest with some "twigs." Children can also dress up like Joe Cool or the Red Baron, climb inside a giant pumpkin in the pumpkin patch and sit down at a light table to trace Peanuts characters and text bubbles.

There is even more fun to be had back at the birthday party for anyone turning 5. Guests can jump on Lucy's moonbounce, make birthday cards with Peppermint Pattie and take photographs with Snoopy, who will also lead children in a parade to sing "Happy Birthday" to Port Discovery and enjoy a slice of birthday cake.

Throughout the day, there will be music, hourly raffles of Peanuts plush toys and an appearance by JoJo and Kenny of WWMX 106.5-FM. A clown, a caricaturist and visitors from Whole Foods Market who will be creating food sculptures will also be on hand.

And just like most birthday parties, it's OK to come for the cake, but at this bash it's best to stay for the Schulz.

Port Discovery's Fifth Birthday Beagle Bash is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 35 Market Place. The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $5 (which includes museum admission); free for members. The "Good Grief!" exhibit will continue at the museum through Wednesday. For more information, including hours and admission, call 410-727-8120 or visit www.port discovery.org.
