Mount women nip Monmouth, 11-10, in NEC final

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Katie Mason scored three goals and Kirby Day and Addie Lewis each added two as Mount St. Mary's defeated Monmouth, 11-10, to win the Northeast Conference women's tournament title and advance to the NCAA tournament play-in game.

The Mountaineers (14-4) scored the game's first four goals in 62 seconds.

Erin LaMotte opened the scoring nine seconds into the game, then Mason, Nicole DiAngelo and Lewis all scored in the next 53 seconds to make it 4-0.

Monmouth (9-8) rallied to move to within 6-5 with 2:34 remaining in the half, but the Mountaineers stretched their lead with two more goals before halftime.

They led 11-7 with a little more than 18 minutes left in the second half, but Hawks scored the game's final three goals, the last coming on a free-position shot with 22 seconds left.

Laura Levins led Monmouth's comeback with four goals, and Carolyn Raveia scored twice.

Mount St. Mary's goalie Naomi Campano made 13 saves and earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player honors.

The Mountaineers will play Saturday against Manhattan in the NCAA play-in game.
