Gift ideas to show the first woman in your life how much you care

Focus On Mother's Day

Mom is such an angel. She wiped your nose when you sneezed, fed you chicken soup when you were sick and held your hand when you crossed the street. (And that was just last week).

Dedication like that calls for love. And perhaps a small token of your appreciation.

Here are some last-minute ideas for Mother's Day that she will love.

Take a bow, Mom

A mom who never likes to buy new clothes for herself needs a little something to freshen up her spring / summer wardrobe.

Minnie Mouse had the right idea. Shoes need a little bow, something to dress them up, make them girly and fun. Cynthia Rowley's flower shoe clips, in a variety of designs, do the job nicely.

If Mom puts a whimsical daisy on a plain sandal, she'll be looking sassy, maybe even kicky. If she clips a pink exotic flower onto a pair of boring black pumps, she'll be ready to salsa all of a sudden. Flowers even add a perky touch to bright pink sandals.

Cynthia Rowley flower shoe clips, $30, are available by calling 212-242-0847.

Rain, go away

That see-through bubble umbrella Mom carried in the '70s was the pinnacle of cool. So smart. So practical. So Mom.

Replace that charming accessory with a striped retro number that's so cool and so inexpensive. The $14.99 umbrella will certainly make Mom so happy she'll forget about how you ruined the original when you used it as part of your "Jousting Mary Poppins" Halloween costume. Really.

Swell umbrella available at Target.

Chase the chills

For that touch of chill Mom feels on a spring evening, she might welcome this crocheted cotton sweater. New from Talbots ($88), it comes in sizes 6 to 20, in white, black, apple green, marigold and cornflower blue. There are Talbots stores in Baltimore, Towson, Columbia and Annapolis.

Planting in paisley

Reading you bedtime stories, cooking dinners, acting as host for the annual family reunion: Mom likes traditional activities, and what better way to stay conventional than sending her flowers?

One choice -- an easy one -- is your local florist, who's likely equipped to send flowers almost anywhere. Or, instead of sending a bouquet, show your appreciation with the Yellow Rose in Paisley Provence Planter from 1-800-flowers.com. The cheerful ceramic pot will not only add color, but also liven things up around the house. The piece can be ordered for $34.99.

Perky in pink

After a long winter of black, charcoal and khaki, a little pink is certainly called for.

This Italian paisley stretch shirt is bright and pretty -- just perfect for your favorite mom. She can wear it with jeans, white pants, a skirt -- it doesn't really matter. This tailored little number is the kind of shirt that looks good with just about anything. And the stretchy fabric makes it a comfy fit.

Lands End shirt, available in sizes 4 to 18, costs $79. To purchase: www.landsend.com or call 800-963-4816.

Bright eyes

All those nights Mom stayed up waiting for you no doubt took their toll on her.

Show her you care. Give the gift of radiance around the eyes.

La Prairie Cellular Radiance Eye Cream has a "time-correcting ability to harness the radiant glow of youth," according to the company's press materials. The cream redefines, hydrates and brightens the delicate eye zone. It contains extracts of banana flower and papaya to reduce wrinkles and improve the skin's texture, minerals and light diffusers to impart luminosity and a "bioactive complex" to inhibit the enzymes that destroy the skin's collagen network, reducing the incidence of dark circles.

But all this beauty does not come cheap. The cream costs $250 and is available at Nordstrom.

Come on, you know Mom is worth it.

Carried away

For a mom who carries a lot of things in her purse, it's time to get her a new bag with some style. DKNY's Medium Tie Shopper tote bag for $125 may be a little pricey, but is equipped with a roomy inner zipper pocket, pink leather straps and a long outside pocket.

The canvas is beige with blue lining and a leather tie closure. It's perfect for carrying whatever it is that Mom carries. Order it from www.eluxury.com.

Photo memories

Playing baseball in the living room seemed like a good idea at the time -- until Mom's favorite china picture frame got hit with a foul ball. Replace it with the Mother's Jeweled Heart Frame from Lenox, a frame interlaced with hearts and accented with 24 karat gold.

This frame is unique because Mom's birthstone as well as her children's can be added to it for a touch of personalization. It holds a 4-by-6 inch photograph. It can be found at stores that sell Lenox products, such as Hecht's and JCPenney, or ordered from www.lenox. com for $39.90.
