April 25, 2004

Live Baltimore Home Center and the city Department of Housing and Community Development have scheduled their housing fair for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 8 at Polytechnic Institute, 1400 W. Cold Spring Lane.

The first 50 people to buy homes in targeted west-side neighborhoods and who attend the fair are eligible for a $3,000 grant. The grant is designed as a forgivable loan if the homeowner stays in the house for at least five years.

Participants must settle on a home within 90 days after the fair. The fair will allow people to tour neighborhoods, visit homes for sale and learn about the home-buying process. Tours also will be available in Spanish. The city is offering an additional 15 grants to immigrant buyers.

More than 500 people have received the grants through the program since 1999 and about 7,500 people have participated in the fairs. The event is free.

The east-side fair is scheduled for Sept. 11 at City College, 3220 The Alameda.
