Poet Anne Barney wins third place in association contest

Anne Barney, author of three books of poetry - Stolen Joy: Healing after Infertility and Infant Loss (Icarus Books, 1993); Pinned to the Corkboard (Pudding House Publications, 2000); and Nosegay (Pudding House Publications, 2002) - has won third place in the 2004 Maryland Writers' Association Short Works Contest for her poem "Speeds of Gravity and Light."

Barney, a free-lance writer who teaches English for speakers of other languages at Howard Community College, won free admission to the association's 16th annual writers conference in Brooklyn Park. She lives in Ellicott City.

Henry B. Tate joins Premier Financial

Henry B. Tate has joined Premier Financial Solutions Inc., a Baltimore-based financial services group specializing in long-term care and disability-income insurance.

The Hickory Ridge resident will specialize in long-term care, including home care, assisted living, nursing home services and hospice.

Tate served as a consultant to the Municipal Employees Credit Union of Baltimore, and was chief operating officer for Security Financial Group Inc. in Linthicum.
