Manchester mother has proven persistent

And last week, Guthart and a group of parents calling themselves the North Carroll Overcrowding Alliance began sending out through area elementary and middle school parent groups informational packets with red postcards to be mailed to school officials. Because North Carroll High does not have a PTA or PTO, Guthart and others distributed packets at a high school track meet, a recreation council lacrosse game and an afternoon practice for the high school's production of Les Miserables.

"You sure know how to light a fire," Susan Brown, a reading and language teacher at North Carroll Middle, recently told Guthart, explaining that several children in her homeroom had returned red postcards signed by their parents.

Eleven-year-old Victoria Guthart said she is a little surprised that her mother has taken on this project.

Nonetheless, the sixth-grader said she is sure that school board members will decide to build a high school, perhaps in time for her sophomore year.

"All the principals and teachers want it to happen. And," she added with a shy grin, "my mom's involved."
