Woman guilty of homicide in 2002 crash

April 16, 2004|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A Clinton woman was convicted in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court yesterday on a charge of homicide while impaired for a fatal crash 16 months ago in Friendship.

Andrea Wooten, 32, pleaded guilty to the homicide charge in exchange for a recommendation by the state's attorney's office for a minimum sentence of probation without incarceration.

Dawn Lynn Smallwood, 38, was killed Dec. 25, 2002, when the Toyota Corolla Wooten was driving crossed a double yellow line on Chesapeake Beach Road and slammed into Smallwood's Chevrolet Cavalier.

Both women were flown to Washington Hospital Center, where Smallwood was pronounced dead less than an hour later, police said.

Wooten told a judge that she was under the influence of painkillers for a pelvic injury at the time of the crash and lost consciousness moments before her car swerved into oncoming traffic, according to the state's attorney's office.

Wooten will be sentenced July 8.
