Guy Peter Fernandez, 49, building manager

Guy Peter Fernandez, building operations manager for CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and formerly an engineer on oil tankers, died of a heart attack Saturday at his Columbia home. He was 49.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Arbutus, Mr. Fernandez was a 1973 graduate of Lansdowne High School and senior class president.

He earned a degree in marine engineering from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y. While at the academy, Mr. Fernandez was a platoon commander and played clarinet in the regimental band.

He joined Exxon and sailed with its domestic tanker fleet. He rose to become a licensed chief engineer before joining CareFirst in 1984. He was building manager of its Owings Mills facility.

Mr. Fernandez enjoyed golf, running and skiing.

A funeral Mass was offered yesterday at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Elkridge.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 26 years, the former JoAnne Zawitoski, an attorney with the firm of Semmes, Bowen & Semmes in Baltimore; two sons, Nicholas Edward Peter Fernandez and Jared Michael Guy Fernandez, both of Columbia; his parents, Peter and Patricia Fernandez of Reynoldsville, Pa.; two brothers, Douglas Fernandez of Pasadena and Robin Fernandez of Reynoldsville; and a sister, Joanne Fernandez of Lesotho in southern Africa.
