Give nods to some for 2004-2005

April 14, 2004

ABC announced yesterday it has picked up seven series - four comedies and three unscripted shows - for 2004-2005. It previously announced NYPD Blue would return for a 12th and final season.

The sitcoms getting another season are freshman show Hope & Faith, a linchpin of the network's Friday comedy block, and veterans My Wife and Kids, George Lopez and According to Jim. Extreme Makeover and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition also got the nod, along with the long-running, plug-it-in-anywhere utility player America's Funniest Home Videos.

Missing from the list are Alias, which could be ABC's only other returning drama next season; 8 Simple Rules, its highest-rated comedy; and dependable unscripted franchise The Bachelor. The network could make more announcements in advance of May's presentation to advertisers.

And, Smallville and Everwood, two of WB's young-adult dramas, have received orders for next year, the network says. They join Gilmore Girls, picked up earlier this year, 7th Heaven and Charmed. Freshman drama One Tree Hill is on the bubble.

Ratings for both Smallville and Everwood have taken a hit this season, mirroring WB as a whole, which is off about 9 percent in total viewers compared to this time last season.
