Red Sox update

Boston needed yesterday's off day in a big way. After splitting four games at Camden Yards last week - losing the finale, 3-2, in 13 innings - the Red Sox had plane trouble and didn't get to Fenway Park until 7:30 Friday morning for their 3 p.m. home opener. Boston's bullpen was so gassed, manager Terry Francona had to use first baseman Dave McCarty to pitch in that loss to Toronto. But the Red Sox finally got some sleep and won the next two games, getting a walk-off home run from David Ortiz to win Sunday in the 12th inning. Johnny Damon has missed the past two games after fouling a pitch off his left knee, but Francona was hopeful to have Damon in the lineup tonight. The Red Sox are already without shortstop Nomar Garciaparra (Achilles' tendon) and right fielder Trot Nixon (back).
