Man is charged in girl's shooting

A man who initially told police that another man had shot him and an 11-year-old girl Saturday night after an argument outside a house in the Lakeland neighborhood has been charged with shooting the girl, city police said yesterday.

Reginald Hays, 20, of the 2500 block of Marbourne Ave. was arrested Sunday after treatment at Maryland Shock Trauma Center for a minor head wound -- apparently from a bullet fragment of a shot he had fired, police said.

The suspect told officers earlier that another man had stepped on the fingers of Kisha Chambers as she sat outside a house in the 2500 block of Marbourne Ave., and returned with a gun after an ensuing argument and fired into the house, police said.

In a later account, police said, the suspect told of firing an errant shot at the man, who had threatened him with a knife after stepping on the girl's fingers. The shot wounded Kisha, who remained hospitalized yesterday at Johns Hopkins Hospital, police said.

Police said they are seeking the man who had been the intended target.
