In a field that featured three stakes winners, Umpateedle earned her first added-money victory when she turned back the favorites to win the $50,000 Primonetta Stakes for older fillies and mares yesterday at Pimlico Race Course, the first of 26 stakes races during the 10-week spring meet.

Umpateedle and jockey Ramon Dominguez surged from the gate to tale the lead, then battled Balmy to the finish line to win the six-furlong race by 1 1/4 lengths in 1 minute, 11.02 seconds. Post-time favorite Bronze Abe never got into contention, but rallied late to reach third.

Umpateedle, owned by Michael Gill and trained by Mark Shuman, paid $10.60 as third choice in the wagering.

Umpateedle, Dominguez said, " ... really took me by surprise by putting me on the front, so I let her do her own thing."
