Red Sox update

Boston closed spring training with numerous concerns. Martinez gave up six runs before recording an out in his final exhibition start, Tuesday against Toronto. His drop in velocity, to the 87- to 90-mph range, and his lowered arm angle had scouts buzzing all spring. The three-time Cy Young winner finished exhibition play with a 6.75 ERA. New closer Keith Foulke, meantime, posted a 15.59 spring ERA. Then there's the lineup. The Red Sox won't have shortstop Nomar Garciaparra (tender right Achilles' tendon) until the end of April or right fielder Trot Nixon (sore back) until May, at the earliest. Gabe Kapler replaces Nixon in right field. Pokey Reese moves to shortstop, and Mark Bellhorn will play second base. For now, the Orioles probably have the better lineup. But starting Tuesday, Boston's superior starting pitching staff could make all the difference.
