State director to address meeting of Democratic club

The Carroll County Democratic Club will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Frisco Family Pub in Carroll Plaza Shopping Center on Englar Road, Westminster.

Josh White, executive director of the Maryland Democratic Party, will speak.

Club officers will be elected after the program.

Visitors are invited to arrive early for an informal dinner before the program.

Group to hear tips on protesting taxes

The Carroll County Taxpayers Association will meet at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Westminster Senior Center.

Jerry Brunst will offer tips for protesting high property tax re-assessments.

All property owners and interested citizens are welcome.

McDaniel plans lecture on conflict resolution

McDaniel College will present a lecture on peace and conflict resolution at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in McDaniel Lounge.

Mohammed Abu Nimer, associate professor at the American University's School of International Service in International Peace and Conflict Resolution in Washington, and director of the Peacebuilding and Development Institute, will speak on "Prospects for Peace and Conflict Resolution in the Middle East."

Abu Nimer has conducted research on conflict resolution and dialogue for peace among Palestinians and Jews in Israel, on the application of conflict resolution models in Muslim communities, and on interfaith conflict resolution.

Abu Nimer has conducted conflict resolution training workshops in Israel, Egypt, Northern Ireland, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

He is a co-founder and co-editor of the new Journal of Peacebuilding and Development.

Government offices to close for Good Friday

Carroll County government offices will be closed Friday for Good Friday.

Northern Landfill and the Recycling Center will be open.

Carroll County public libraries and senior centers also will be closed Friday.

Public schools will be closed for spring break Thursday through April 12.

Historical Society to focus on local poets

The Historical Society of Carroll County will hold its monthly box-lunch talk at noon April 13 at American Legion Carroll Post 31 at Green and Sycamore streets, Westminster.

In celebration of Poetry Month, author Jesse Glass will present "The Hidden Muse -- 19th Century Carroll County Poets," the results of his study of poetry by local writers that appeared in Carroll County newspapers. Poetry was an important part of 19th-century American culture, and residents would gather at the Westminster opera house for readings.

Participants may take a lunch or purchase a meal from the American Legion. Lunches can be ordered after 11 a.m. at 410-857-7953. Beverage and dessert will be provided.

Admission is $2 for nonmembers and free for historical society members. Reservations are recommended.

Water gardening topic of meeting April 14

Carroll County Master Gardeners invite the public to hear the guest speaker at their monthly general meetings.

The next meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 14 at Carroll Cooperative Extension, Smith Avenue, Westminster. Richard Koogle, director of operations at Lilypons Water Gardens, will discuss the popularity of water gardening and how easy it can be.

Topics will include plants, fish, installation, stocking, maintaining and tips for clear, clean water, as well as new trends in water gardening.

Registration is required. The cost is $5, payable at the lecture.
