Chow, Idella Tong

On April 1, 2004, IDELLA TONG CHOW, at the home of her son. Born August 12, 1907, in Portland, Oregon. Among Mrs. Chow's achievements is the fact that she was the first Chinese woman to graduate from the University of Oregon. She then earned her MA degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she majored in organ and piano. Mrs. Chow is preceded in death by her husband Dr. Bacon Field Chow, a world famous biochemist and by her daughter, Jean Chow Wong. She is survived by her son, Dr. Bryant (Sally) Chow, of Mobile, her son-in-law, Dr. Vernon Wong, of Palo Alto, CA. She also leaves to cherish her memory four grandsons, Dr. Randall Wong, of Bethesda, MD, James (Toni) Chow, of Ringgold, GA, Robb (Aasko) Wong of Rockville, MD, and Alan (Jill) Chow, of Daphne, AL. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren: Marina, Grant, and Kendall Wong, Christopher and Mitchell Chow, Chieko Wong, and Janie and Jordan Chow. Graveside Services will be held at the Riverview Cemetery, Portland, Oregon, with the Rev. Terry Fouse officiating. The family request in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Chow's honor to the American Red Cross, Alabama Gulf Chapter, P.O. Box 1764, Mobile, AL, 36633, for whom she was a long time volunteer. Arrangements by Johnson-Allen Mortuary, 600 Chestnut Street, Mobile, AL 36603.
