William O. Hayes Jr., 86, lawyer active in real estate

William O. Hayes Jr., a retired lawyer who was active in real estate business, died in his sleep March 26 at Stella Maris Hospice. The Catonsville resident was 86.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Arbutus, he was a 1935 graduate of Calvert Hall College High School. He earned a law degree from the University of Baltimore and studied violin at the Peabody Conservatory.

An Army lieutenant in World War II, he worked 35 years at Title Guarantee Co., retiring in 1982 as senior vice president. In the mid-1960s he was Greater Baltimore Board of Realtors president.

Under contract to Rouse Co., he did title work for farmland that became part of Columbia. He played golf at the Rolling Road County Club.

A funeral Mass was offered Tuesday at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church in Catonsville, where he was a member.

Survivors include a son, William O. Hayes III of Towson; two daughters, Maureen S. Kendall of Baltimore and Virginia L. Sly of Linthicum; and three grandchildren. His wife of 54 years, the former Beverly Kolbe, died in 1995.
