Council celebrates center's anniversary with `Casablanca'

To celebrate the first anniversary of its arts center, the Carroll County Arts Council will show Casablanca at 2 p.m. Sunday.

This classic film stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid in the original black-and-white format.

The 1942 film also features haunting cinematography, a romantic musical score, and a compelling story of wartime refugees gathering in Morocco to obtain scarce exit visas.

Doors open 30 minutes before showtime. Tickets, available in advance, are $5 for adults and $4 for children younger than 12 and seniors 60 or older. Arts council members will be admitted free while tickets last.

The Carroll Arts Center is at 91 W. Main St., Westminster.

Information: 410-848-7272.

David Maskeroni, a senior at McDaniel College, will give a trombone recital at 7 p.m. Wednesday in McDaniel Lounge.

A music major, Maskeroni will play Sonata in F Major by Benedetto Marcello, Sonata in E Flat by Robert L. Sanders, Six Studies in English Folk-Song by R. Vaughn Williams, and Concert Piece No. 5 by B.M. Blazhevich.

Council plans bus trip to see Manet exhibit

The Carroll County Arts Council is sponsoring a bus trip to see the exhibition Manet and the Sea at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on April 21.

The show is the first to explore the marine paintings of Edouard Manet and his contemporaries, including Monet, Renoir and Morisot, who were also influenced by the power, force and beauty of the sea.

On the way to the museum, Susan Williamson, the council's visual arts coordinator, will give a lecture about the exhibit's painters.

The cost is $50 for members and $55 for others. It includes continental breakfast on the bus, museum admission, an audio tour, transportation and gratuity. Lunch is on your own.

Reservations are required.

Information: 410-848-7272.

Instruments sought for donation program

The Carroll County Arts Council is collecting used band and orchestra instruments for its Carroll County Musical Instrument Bank.

The arts council cleans and repairs donated instruments and gives them to children whose families cannot afford to rent or buy them.

Cleaning and repairs are done over the summer so instruments are available when school starts in the fall.

Donors are asked to deliver instruments to the arts council during regular business hours at 91 W. Main St., Westminster.

Instruments will be appraised, and donors will be given a receipt for tax purposes.

Information: 410-848-7272.
