Two men believed to be undocumented immigrants were shot early yesterday, one of them fatally, in an apparent robbery as they waited for a bus in West Baltimore, city police said.

The victims' names were withheld pending notification of relatives outside the United States, said Agent Troy Harris, a Police Department spokesman.

About 2:40 a.m., the men were waiting for a bus in the 1700 block of W. Saratoga St. when two gunmen stepped from a nearby alley and demanded their money and valuables, Harris said.

One of the victims was robbed of his watch before the gunmen - for no apparent reason - opened fire, and the men were each shot in the face at close range, Harris said.

The victims were taken by ambulance to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where one died about 9:30 a.m. yesterday and the other was reported in fair condition, Harris said.

Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to call homicide detectives at 410-396-2100.
