William M. Stokes Sr., 57, systems analyst, veteran

William M. Stokes Sr., a retired systems analyst and Air Force veteran, died of cancer Wednesday at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. He was 57.

Mr. Stokes, who was born and raised in Baltimore, graduated from City College in 1965. He served in the Air Force as a loadmaster from 1966 to 1970. He remained in the Air Force Reserve until retiring in 1999.

Mr. Stokes, an Abingdon resident, worked for the U.S. Postal Service, the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Department of Labor.

For 15 years until retiring in 2002, he was a systems analyst for the Center for Medicare-Medicaid Services in Woodlawn.

He was a lifelong member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity's Pi Omega Chapter and a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Mr. Stokes was a member of Faith Baptist Church, 833 N. Bond St., where services will be held at noon Tuesday.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, the former Evelyn M. Jones; a son, William M. Stokes Jr. of Bel Air; a daughter, Miriam Stokes of Abingdon; his father, William E. Stokes of Baltimore; his mother, Miriam L. Stokes of Baltimore; a sister, Miriam Mason of Baltimore; and three grandchildren.
