Ophelia R. Patterson, 83, Pasadena homemaker

Ophelia R. Patterson, a Pasadena homemaker, died of cervical cancer Sunday at Chesapeake Hospice House in Linthicum. She was 83.

Born Ophelia Gilchrist in Burrowsville, Va., she was raised in Baltimore and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in 1939. She graduated from the Cortez W. Peters Business School in 1941.

She worked briefly in the secretarial pool at the Pentagon before marrying Roy Patterson Jr. in 1941. Her husband, who survives her, was a vocational teacher at Baltimore's Lake Clifton High School.

The couple moved from West Baltimore to Pasadena in the late 1950s.

Mrs. Patterson enjoyed growing tomatoes, beans and cucumbers in her garden and fishing on the Magothy River.

She was a longtime member of Fountain Baptist Church in Baltimore.

A private memorial service was planned for Sunday.

Mrs. Patterson also is survived by two daughters, Carolyn V. Ladeji of Baltimore and S. Dale Patterson of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Dorothy Brown of Lynchburg, Va., and Hellen Waddy of Baltimore; and four grandchildren.
