Budget hearings for county agencies scheduled for today

The Carroll County commissioners are scheduled to hold budget hearings for county agencies starting at 10 a.m. today.

The hearings precede the commissioners' evaluation of the $295.5 million recommended budget for the 2005 fiscal year. Next month, the commissioners will propose their operating and capital budgets.

Agencies that will request additional money include the Health Department, the Humane Society, family and children's services, and the Planning and General Services departments.

The Carroll County Board of Education and the Carroll County Volunteer Fireman's Association are expected to present their requests starting at 7 p.m. tonight in Room 003 of the County Office Building, 225 N. Center St., Westminster.

`Meet the Mayor' event canceled in Taneytown

The Taneytown Knights of Columbus Council has canceled its "Meet the Mayor Night" scheduled for 7 p.m. today at St. Joseph Church because Mayor W. Robert Flickinger underwent open-heart surgery Friday.

Vincent Perticone, Knights of Columbus publicity coordinator, said the mayor's wife, Fairy Flickinger, said that the surgery, performed at the University of Maryland, was successful and that the mayor was doing well.

The Knights hope to reschedule the event.

McDaniel College president honored by `Daily Record'

McDaniel College President Joan Develin Coley has been inducted into The Daily Record's Circle of Excellence.

Coley was recognized as a third-time honoree of Maryland's Top 100 Women for making a positive impact in the state. She also received the award in 2000 and 2002.
