City man killed trying to cross Ritchie Highway

GLEN BURNIE - Two cars struck and killed a 47-year-old Baltimore man Friday night as he attempted to cross Ritchie Highway, Anne Arundel County police said yesterday.

Roger M. Miller of the 2600 block of N. Calvert St. was crossing the road in front of a Denny's restaurant about 10 p.m. when he was hit by a northbound vehicle driven by Kimberly C. Jones, 20, of Baltimore, police said. The impact threw Miller into the center of the road in the 6600 block of Ritchie Highway, where he was run over by a second vehicle.

Jones was not charged. A witness obtained the license plate number of the second vehicle, a 1994 Chrysler registered to an auto repair service. Police said they had not located the driver as of last night.

Rowhouse fire forces one family to evacuate

A fire in a vacant North Baltimore rowhouse spread last night to three neighboring buildings - one of them occupied - before firefighters brought it under control. No one was injured, but at least one family was displaced.

Officials said the fire started about 10:20 p.m. on the third floor of a house in the 2000 block of St. Paul St. and spread across the top floors of the other rowhouses before it was extinguished 40 minutes later.

Daniel Lemus, 28, and his wife, 13-month-old son and brother lived on the third floor of one of the buildings. Lemus said he was awakened by a smoke alarm in his apartment and then police rang his doorbell and told him and his family to evacuate.

Police and fire investigators were investigating the cause of the blaze.
