Team Kan-Do, the only Maryland entry to date in the next Volvo Ocean Race Round the World, has chosen two Annapolis companies to design its Volvo 70 boat and develop its sails.

Farr Yacht Design and North Sails were selected by the Annapolis-based team after reviewing proposals from groups around the world.

Syndicate founders John Alden and Patrick Bischoff cited the success of Farr and North Sails in previous Volvo races.

Farr has designed the overall winning boat in each Volvo Ocean Race since 1985. In the 2001-2002 race, North Sails designed and provided all of the sails for the entrants.

"We are pleased to have two world-class operations to work with right here in Annapolis," Alden said.

The next Volvo Ocean Race, an eight-month circumnavigation covering 32,000 nautical miles, will begin in November 2005 and will make its only North American stop in Baltimore and Annapolis in April 2006.
