A driver failed to stop after striking and killing a city woman Monday night as she tried to cross a street in West Baltimore.

Yvonne Marie Stokes, 45, of the 600 block of Stamford Road in the Westgate community was crossing the westbound lanes of the 4000 block of Edmondson Ave. about 11 p.m. when she was struck by a gold Ford Focus, said Agent Donny Moses, a Police Department spokesman.

The impact threw the woman almost 60 feet, Moses said. Stokes died less than an hour later at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Moses said.

He said the car is believed to have front-end damage and possibly a damaged windshield. The driver may have tried to have the car repaired, he said.

Anyone with information about the driver or the car is asked to call traffic investigation at 410-396-2606.
