Poor second-half shooting dooms Bowie's Div. II bid

Bulldogs fall in 2nd round to Francis Marion, 95-78

KENNESAW, Ga. - Forward Randy Williams scored a game-high 28 points and guard Jarron Hinton added 22 as Francis Marion beat Bowie State, 95-78, yesterday in the second round of the NCAA men's Division II playoffs at the Spec Landrum Centre.

Bowie State (23-6), the third seed in the South Atlantic region, trailed by just 41-38 at halftime, but the second-seeded Patriots (27-3), who shot 37 percent from the floor in the first half, distanced themselves in the second by shooting 51.5 percent.

The Bulldogs got 23 points from Allen Van Norden and 20 from Anton Jenifer, but shot 34 percent in the second half and missed 17 of 21 three-point attempts. For the game, they hit just nine of 33 from beyond the arc.

Louis McCullough scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Mike Buglione added 14 points for Francis Marion. Williams hit 12 of 19 shots from the floor and pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with his 28 points. Hinton added eight assists.

Letheal Cook scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Ray Akinola added 13 for Bowie, which was outscored at the free-throw line, 27-17.

The Patriots hit 16 of 20 from the line in the second half.

Bowie State defeated Lenoir-Rhyne, 86-81, Saturday to advance to yesterday's game. It was the second straight year the Bulldogs had ended the season for Lenoir-Rhyne (19-9).

Tomorrow at 7, Francis Marion will play the winner of last night's Kennesaw State/Columbus State game in the region final.
