Johns Hopkins women hit ground running in 13-5 win

Key's five goals power No. 17 Jays by Ohio State

The 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team started strong - scoring the game's first five goals - and didn't let up in defeating No. 19 Ohio State, 13-5, yesterday at Homewood Field.

Mary Key had a game-high five goals for the Blue Jays (5-0), and teammate Steph Janice added two.

Key started the scoring just 2 minutes, 34 seconds into the game. She added her second goal at 7:56. Megan Voight continued the run with a score at 8:47 followed by goals at 21:36 by Marlena Wittelsberger and at 23:37 by Janice.

Ohio State (1-3) stopped the run with a goal at 28:29 by Amy Tulk to end the scoring in the half.

Johns Hopkins opened the second half with an Erin Riordan goal at 31:19.

Ohio State responded with Tulk's second goal at 31:47. Blue Jay Heidi Pearce made it 7-2 at 36:10. OSU's Ashley Evans (Centennial) scored at 39:52 to make it 7-3. Key's third goal at 41:05 made the lead 8-3.

The Buckeyes, with goals by Caroline Weatherill (43:17) and Kelyn Laws (Mount Hebron) (51:22), cut the lead to three at 8-5.

The Blue Jays responded with two goals in a period of 17 seconds.
