RICHMOND, Va. - The Coppin State women couldn't make it a double in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference finals.

Hours after the Coppin men survived against Delaware State, the Lady Eagles ran into the hottest team in the league and lost, falling to Hampton, 76-58, in the semifinal round at the Richmond Coliseum.

Second-seeded Hampton (16-12) slowly but surely pulled away to capture its 11th straight victory and vault into the championship game today against top-seeded Delaware State.

Coppin, which had a five-game winning streak ended, finished with an 18-11 record.

Guarding a two-point edge midway through the second half, the Lady Pirates broke away on the strength of MEAC Rookie of the Year Sharema Dean (25 points) and 6-foot-3 forward Kiesha Beard (22 points, 10 rebounds).

Nicole Brathwaite, the league's leading scorer, stayed quiet during the spurt, which atoned for a 61-60 home loss to Coppin on Jan. 31 in the teams' only meeting.

Hampton - and Beard in particular - clamped down hard on Coppin's post player, Leisel Harry, who was limited to five shots and three points.

"Everything we do goes through Leisel Harry. We want to play inside out," said Lady Eagles coach Derek Brown. "We just had a hard time getting it in there and we're not going to win relying on outside shots."

Coppin had not appeared in the semifinals since 1998 and, with only Harry and Antoinette Reese departing, figures to be back in the picture next season.

Sherrie Tucker scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace the Lady Eagles. Reese added 13 points.

But the team shot only 31 percent from the field because of its inability to get the ball inside.

"We've got a positive program that is in a fledgling state," said Brown. "Getting to the semis is something we haven't done in a while. We played a team that knows big games. To us, that's a novelty."
