Keeping in step with salsa dancing

Scene: clubs, bars, nightlife

When shuffling into the salsa scene, it's best to take things quick-quick-slow.

Instructor Barbara Bernstein says if you can walk in that pattern, you are on your way to learning the fluid movements of salsa dancing.

A rhythmic mixture of Latin genres, including Cuban and Puerto Rican, created the foundation for salsa's explosion in popularity, attracting people with different levels of experience.

"It's all about keeping your feet in time with the music," Bernstein said, adding that it's hard to quit after one listens to the sound of salsa music because, she says, "it's intoxicating."

Besides being an opportunity to groove, salsa, Bernstein says, is also a great way to form social networks and exercise enjoyably.

Beginner and experienced dancers can find out for themselves by checking out LIVE's sampling of some clubs and dance studios around town stepping to the Latin beat.
