BOYS

Andrew Winfield

South Carroll, wrestling

In a battle of undefeated 171-pounders, the Cavaliers senior beat Owings Mills' Eric Fishel to capture a Class 2A-1A state championship at Cole Field House on Saturday.

After pinning Southern-AA's Joe Collinson, North Harford's Matt Griggs and Edgewood's Eric Lindblad to earn a spot in the final, Winfield scored a 6-1 decision over Fishel, who entered the match at 39-0.

The victory improved Winfield's record to 30-0 and helped South Carroll to a third-place finish. Winfield, No. 1 in The Sun's rankings, finished second in the state last year with an 8-6 loss to Scott Church of Richard Montgomery in the 160-pound final bout.

He is a two-time Carroll County and Class 2A-1A West regional champion.

GIRLS

Candice Britton

Woodlawn, basketball

The 5-11 point guard did a little bit of everything for the No. 4 Warriors in their run to a second straight Class 4A North championship. In three games, the senior totaled 26 points, 34 assists, 31 rebounds and 21 steals.

With teammates who could score, Britton didn't mind dishing out assists, an average of 11.3 for the week. In the Warriors' 53-49 win over No. 11 Westminster in the regional final, Britton had 13 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and six steals.

Bound for Wagner College in the fall, Britton averages 14.2 points, 11.3 assists, 6.4 rebounds and 4.6 steals per game for the Baltimore County champs. She also played on the Freeplay Magic team that finished fourth in the national 17-and-under Amateur Athletic Union championships last summer.
