RICHMOND, Va. -- Tiffany Winkfield showed yesterday why she was named to the All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's basketball first team.

The athletic senior from Los Angeles scored a tournament-record 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, leading UMES past North Carolina A&T, 79-61, in the play-in round of the conference tournament at the Arthur Ashe Center.

UMES (12-16) advanced to play No. 2 seed Hampton tomorrow at the Richmond Coliseum.

The Lady Aggies (7-22) hung with UMES into the early portion of the second half. The game was tied at 40 when Winkfield and her mates began pounding the backboards, tightening the defense and running end to end. After a 20-2 splurge by the Lady Hawks, the outcome was sealed.

"We were in it and then we broke down mentally and didn't execute anything on offense," said North Carolina A&T coach Saudia Roundtree. "Once you get down 15 or 20 points, you have to make some stops and everybody didn't come to play."

Winkfield certainly did, amassing 20 points and eight rebounds after halftime as UMES upheld its reputation as a second-half team.

"It was just a blessing," she said of her all-league selection, gained by averaging 14.1 points and 10.7 rebounds in the regular season.
