Harbor Hospital to hold six-week childbirth class

Harbor Hospital will be offering the following women's and infants' classes at the hospital, 3001 S. Hanover St.:

Mondays, March 22 through April 26, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Life Resource Center. Six-Week Childbirth Class covers the role of the birth partner, signs and stages of labor, prenatal exercises, relaxation techniques, birthing methods, the postpartum period and a tour of the hospital's labor and delivery facility. Support groups meet regularly at hospital

Harbor Hospital offers the services of support groups to aid area residents. The groups include:

Adult Day Health Care, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and weekends from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., provides medical day care for frail elderly and mentally handicapped adults. 410-350-8260.

Arm-In-Arm, 7 p.m., third Tuesday of the month, in the hospital's LifeResource Center, a support group for breast cancer patients and their families.

Bay Bridge Breathers, 7 p.m., second Monday of the month, LifeResource Center, gives support for people with emphysema, chronic bronchitis and pulmonary fibrosis.

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., second Tuesday of the month, in the LifeResource Center Library.

Harbor Hikers, an informal walking program that meets daily from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Glen Burnie Mall, 6711 Ritchie Highway, Glen Burnie. The hikers offer free blood pressure screening each Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Red Cross offers CPR, first aid courses

Courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid have been scheduled for this month at several sites in Anne Arundel County by the American Red Cross of Central Maryland. They include:

Adult CPR, training in emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedure and rescue for victims age 8 and older. It is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Edgewater Red Cross, 3475 Pike Ridge Road; 9 a.m. March 20, Stanton Community Center, 92 W. Washington St., Annapolis; 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. March 23, Edgewater Red Cross; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 27, Edgewater and Annapolis. Cost: $37.

Adult, Infant and Child CPR, training for use on victims in a variety of emergency situations, including performing rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway and performing one-rescuer CPR, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 20 at Annapolis and March 27 at Edgewater. Cost: $42.

Infant and Child CPR, training for those who might be reluctant to act in emergency situations and have frequent contact with children younger than age 8 in emergency situations, including performing rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway and performing one-rescuer CPR. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Blvd., Severna Park, and March 20 at Edgewater Red Cross. Cost: $37.

Crime Avoidance Training, interactive training that focuses on empowering individuals to take responsibility for their safety. The class covers security awareness, tough-target strategies, safety on the move, using an ATM and responding to threatening situations. Instructors will come to a facility, group or organization at a time that is convenient for the group. A minimum of 10 people is required. The fee is $9.95. Health Department offers child safety-seat inspection

The county Health Department and local law enforcement agencies offer year-round car-safety seat inspections at:

Brooklyn Park Health Center, 300 Hammonds Lane, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., third Thursday of the month. By appointment only. 410-222-6620.

Odenton Health Center, 1370 Odenton Road, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., second Thursday and fourth Tuesday of the month. No appointment required. 410-222-6660.

Parole Health Center, 1950 Drew St., Annapolis, 9 a.m. to noon, first and third Tuesday of the month. By appointment only. 410-222-7249.

In recent inspections, 85 percent of child seats were found to be improperly installed.

Health Department has 13 information kits

The county Health Department offers 13 health information kits, including:

Healthy Eating Kit: contains healthful recipes and menu ideas, and cancer-prevention ideas.

Women's Health Kit: features facts on breast and cervical cancer prevention, screenings, immunization information and tips for healthy skin and bones.

Colorectal Cancer Kit: provides brochures on the risk factors and prevention of the disease. It also contains information on nutrition and exercise.

Fifty-Plus Health: features health and wellness tips for older people, including exercise safety, oral health and men's cancer prevention.

Safe-in-the-Sun Kit: offers guidelines for prevention of skin cancer in children and adults.

Overcoming Colorectal Cancer in the Korean Community: a bilingual brochure on prevention and treatment of colon cancer.
