Driver fleeing police hits tree, suffers loss of both legs

COLESVILLE - A driver fleeing Montgomery County police after his car had been stopped early yesterday slammed into a tree, and lost his legs in the high-speed impact, authorities said.

Police said an officer who had stopped the car for speeding on Bel Pre Road about 3 a.m. observed an illegal drug inside the vehicle. The driver, police said, became nervous and drove off, striking the officer's arm. The officer pursued the car along Bonifant Road and then onto Carona Drive, where the car hit the tree and the driver was thrown from the vehicle, police said.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Police said drugs and money were recovered at the scene of the collision.

Pilot, passenger injured in crash of small aircraft

FREDERICK - A small aircraft crashed yesterday morning in a Frederick field shortly after takeoff from the city airport, injuring its two occupants, state police reported.

The victims - Robert Borris, 52, of McLean, Va., pilot of the single-engine Trinidad GT four-seater, and passenger Lynne Murphy, 53, of Great Falls, Va. - were flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, said Sgt. Steve Hassett.

Frederick Mayor Jennifer P. Dougherty said that apparently the plane had "a miscue on takeoff," and crashed through a small fence into a farm field about 200 yards from the end of the runway.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.

RIVERDALE - County police were searching yesterday for a driver who ran over two pedestrians after fleeing from a traffic stop, killing one of them.

A Riverdale Park police officer had pulled a car over at Kenilworth Avenue and Riverdale Road, believing it to have been stolen. As he approached it on foot, the driver accelerated - but lost control two blocks away and hit the pedestrians before coming to a stop.

A 35-year-old man died at the scene, and another adult male was injured, police said. The driver fled, but a female passenger was injured and taken to a hospital. A police spokesman said she is cooperating with investigators.
