McDaniel College to raise tuition 7.2% for next school year

Annual tuition at McDaniel College will increase 7.2 percent to $24,500 for the 2004-2005 academic year, according to the college's board of trustees.

Currently, students pay $22,860 for the year.

Starting in the fall, students will pay $5,600 per year for standard room and board, an increase of $20.

The college's Board of Trustees voted to increase tuition last month. About 85 percent of McDaniel students receive financial aid, college officials said.

Business district expansion on agenda in Westminster

The Westminster Common Council is expected tomorrow night to discuss a proposal to expand the city's business district west along Pennsylvania Avenue into the primarily residential area.

The zoning amendment would allow establishment of light businesses, such as coffeehouses and art galleries, from West Main Street to Sullivan Avenue.

The proposal was part of a series of recommendations made by a task force, who in 2002 studied ways to revitalize the troubled neighborhood around Pennsylvania Avenue.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Westminster City Hall.
