In what proved to be nothing more than a final tuneup for Coppin State before the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament begins Monday in Richmond, Va., the Eagles coasted to a 72-42 women's basketball victory over host Morgan State.

The Eagles, who shot nearly 50 percent from the field in the first half, sprinted to a 22-9 lead before the Bears tried briefly to make a game of it. But Coppin didn't let the Bears get any closer before 2,195.

Thanks to Leisel Harry's dominance on the boards, the Bears, who shot just 20 percent in the first half, weren't getting many second chances. The 6-foot-3 senior center grabbed six of her 11 defensive rebounds in the first half. And her 10 first-half points helped Coppin build a comfortable 38-17 lead at the break.

"This sends a message to the other teams that we're coming out," Harry said. "It all starts with defense. Defense brings offense."

The Eagles poured it on even more after intermission, starting the half on a 14-4 run.

The Eagles (17-10, 13-5 MEAC) await the outcome of today's Hampton-Norfolk State game for their seeding Monday. A loss by Hampton would make the Pirates also 13-5, giving Coppin the tournament's No. 2 seeding on a tiebreaker. Coppin beat Hampton in January, 61-60.

"It makes a big difference," Coppin coach Derek Brown said. "We would rather be the No. 2 seed because it would give us a break."

Morgan, meanwhile, was just happy that every team makes it to postseason play. The last-place Bears (3-23, 3-14) will most likely draw the last seed when the official tournament pairings come out later today.

"We just need to put this behind us," Morgan coach Angelyne Brown said. "We're a young team trying to find consistency."
