Missing Hopkins student found returning from trip

March 06, 2004

A 19-year-old Johns Hopkins student missing for nearly two weeks was found on a bus yesterday returning from a camping trip as he tried to cross the U.S.-Canadian border in Washington state, university officials said. He was unhurt.

Sophomore Nicholas Culbertson of Fishers, Ind., told campus security officers in a telephone call that he left campus voluntarily after he was last seen Feb. 22. He had left behind his wallet and keys.

Customs officers found Culbertson, a neuroscience major, on a Vancouver-to-Seattle bus and realized he was listed as a missing person. The university issued an alert last week seeking the public's help in locating Culbertson.
