ALBANY, N.Y. - It was a first step for the No. 5 seed Loyola women. And thanks to a strong finish against No. 10 Rider, it won't be the last.

For the second time in the three-year tenure of coach Candy Cage, the Greyhounds have advanced to the second round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic tournament after downing the upset-minded Broncs, 79-65, at Pepsi Arena.

The Greyhounds (14-14) will meet No. 4 Canisius this morning in a quarterfinal matchup.

"The first one's hard to get," Cage said. "We got the first one. Now, we've got to get on a little roll."

Loyola didn't get rolling against the Broncs (5-23) until the second half, when they took a 36-31 lead to 71-50 with 4:13 to play.

"I think in the first half, we were a little tight," said sophomore forward Katie Scherle, who led the Greyhounds with 18 points. "We're a pretty young team, so I guess we were a little excited. But in the second half, we settled down a little bit, and I think it showed."

Loyola went ahead to stay at 17-16 on Scherle's jumper with 8:54 to go.

Loyola led 36-29 at the half on an off-balance short-range buzzer-beater by Meghan Wood.

Loyola grabbed control early in the third quarter with consecutive layups by Jill Glessner, Scherle and point guard Krystle Harrington (16 points). Harrington's basket, which made it 42-31 with 18:02 to go, came after she raced down court after forcing a Rider turnover.

"I just love to run," said Harrington, who was the MAAC's final Player of the Week of the season. "And when I run, I think that [the] team follows. If I have energy, then everybody else is going to have energy, too. And we did, in the second half."

Rider got within six points, 46-40, after a pair of jumpers by game-high scorer Leanne Moore (22 points).

But the Broncs never threatened after that.

Loyola split its two meetings this season with Canisius, and Cage said she likes her team's chances against the Golden Griffins.

"We match up OK with them," Cage said. "We're going to go back to the drawing board and come up with a game plan."
