JHU women take NCAA opener

Maureen Myers scored a game-high 22 points as host Johns Hopkins downed Alvernia, 71-53, last night in the first round of the NCAA Division III women's tournament.

Hopkins (24-3) will face Marymount in the second round on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Arlington, Va. Alvernia finished 21-8.

Vermont 70, UMBC 48: Aaron Yantzi and Theresa LaRocque scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, to power the host Catamounts (13-12, 7-10 American East) past the Retrievers (4-22, 4-13).

DeSales 92, Frostburg State 56: The host Bulldogs (22-5) - led by Amy Yencho with 19 points - defeated the Bobcats (16-12) in the opening round of the ECAC South Regional tournament in Center Valley, Pa.

McDaniel 71, Pitt.-Greensburg 64: Kristy Costa scored 12 points and the host Green Terror (24-3) notched its first Division III tournament win.

Men

Albright 87, Johns Hopkins 78: Trevor Deeter scored 24 points as the host Lions (17-9) downed the Blue Jays (17-10) in the opening round of the ECAC South Regional tournament in Reading, Pa.
