A 4-year-old child was killed and the child's grandmother critically burned yesterday evening in a fire that destroyed their Edgewood townhouse, the state fire marshal's office said.

The fire in the 1500 block of F Court, which was reported at 5:25 p.m., quickly raced through the dwelling and went to three alarms in minutes, said W. Faron Taylor, deputy state fire marshal.

"When the first of nearly 100 firefighters arrived on the scene, smoke and flames were pouring out of the windows of the first and second floors of the wood and frame townhouse," he said.

The child - whose gender was not reported - was found dead on a second-floor landing, severely burned. The grandmother, 40, who was found in the back yard, was reported in critical condition at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center with second- and third-degree burns over half of her body. Names were not available.

The woman's husband and the couple's 18-year-old son were not home when the fire, which also damaged two adjoining homes, erupted. Total damage was estimated at $250,000.
