Loyola storms past winless UMBC, 15-8

The fourth-ranked Loyola College women's lacrosse team survived an early first-half scare before going on a six-goal run to defeat UMBC, 15-8, yesterday at UMBC Stadium.

The Retrievers (0-3) jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 4-2 before the Greyhounds (2-0) took an 8-4 lead with 8:40 left in the first half. Loyola expanded its 9-6 halftime lead to 15-6 by holding UMBC scoreless for 27:31 of the second half.

Loyola's Talia Shacklock and Sydney Green and UMBC's Jen Dragoni scored three goals each.

Towson 16, American 13: In a game that featured nine ties and four lead changes, the Tigers (2-0) scored five of the last six goals for the win at Reeves Field in Washington.

Becky Trumbo had four goals for Towson, and Tara Michael had a hat trick for the Eagles (0-1).

Mount St. Mary's 14, Lehigh 10: Katie Simmons and Erin LaMotte (North Carroll) scored three goals each to power the Mount (1-1) past the Mountain Hawks (1-1) in Emmitsburg.

Meredith Carso, Sarah Starsoneck and Emily Studdiford paced Lehigh with three goals each.

Washington College 17, Marymount 12: Lindsey Eichner scored five goals and assisted on four others as the Shorewomen (1-0) beat the Saints (0-1) at Shriver Field in Chestertown.

The win marked the debut of coach Suzie Friedrich.

Goucher 13, McDaniel 5: The host Gophers (1-0) - led by Kate Howell's four goals - notched their fifth straight win over the Green Terror (0-1), which has not defeated Goucher since an 8-7 win on March 25, 1999.

St. Mary's 25, Villa Julie 2: Karli Libertini (Catonsville) tallied three goals and six assists in a commanding win by the host Seahawks (2-0) over the Mustangs (0-1) in St. Mary's City.
