Support grows for 12-wrestler region bracket

4A-3A North area coaches pass plan to tourney panel

The 20 wrestling coaches in Class 4A-3A North region voted unanimously yesterday to present a proposal for a 12-person regional tournament bracket - up from the current one of eight - to the state tournament committee at its meeting in March.

If the nine-member panel approves the plan, the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association's Board of Control would have to do the same in April to implement the change.

Public school coaches and wrestlers, statewide, have grown to dislike the current system. It calls for wrestlers to accumulate points toward earning one of eight bids per weight class for the regional tournament. The top four finishers there qualify for the state tournament.

River Hill coach Earl Lauer said he will discuss the coaches' proposal, drafted by North Carroll's David Dotson, before a meeting of coaches statewide on Friday, on the eve of the state tournament, at Cole Field House.
