North Carolina's women's lacrosse team set a school scoring record yesterday, opening its season with a 23-5 rout of host UMBC.
No. 11 North Carolina scored four times in the first 10 minutes and led at halftime, 16-3, closing on a 12-1 run. A dozen Tar Heels scored, topped by Beth Ames' four goals and three by Nicki Barnes (Severna Park). Brooke Dieringer (St. Mary's), Jess Allen (Hereford) and Christina Juras (McDonogh) had two apiece.
Two goals by Kelly Fiorani (Liberty) led UMBC (0-2).
