Foreign language advisory panel seeks new members

The Foreign Language Advisory Committee for the Howard County public school system seeks new members.

The committee, which meets four times during the school year, participates in long-range planning and setting goals for the foreign language program at elementary, middle and high schools.

It reviews curriculum and new teaching materials, is an advocate for foreign language programs and initiatives and identifies community resources to enrich the experience of learning a second language.

Registration being taken for SAT-PSAT prep courses

Registration is being accepted for SAT-PSAT preparation courses to be held at six Howard County high schools.

Courses will be held at Reservoir High School from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and March 1, 8 and 22; at Centennial High School from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 3, 10, 17 and 24; at Chapelgate Academy from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 13 and 20 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 7 and 14; at Howard High School from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 31 and April 14, 21 and 28; and at Long Reach High School from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 1, 15, 22 and 29.

Tuition is $100, plus a $50 fee for materials.

Classes are open to all students. A portion of the proceeds will go to each school.

School board to meet with budget review panel

The Howard County Board of Education will meet with the Operating Budget Review Committee at 6:15 p.m. today in the boardroom at the Department of Education in Ellicott City. The meeting is open to the public.

A fourth public work session on the operating budget will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the boardroom.

The board will meet at 9 a.m. Feb. 25 to adopt the operating and capital budgets for fiscal year 2005 and the fiscal year 2006--2010 capital improvement program.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held in the boardroom.

The board will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. Feb. 26 in the boardroom. The afternoon session, and an evening session at 7:30 p.m., will begin with a public forum, during which members of the public can speak on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process.

School board-council meeting rescheduled

A quarterly meeting of the Howard County Board of Education and the County Council has been rescheduled for 8:15 a.m. Monday. It is to in the Ellicott Room of the George Howard Building, 3430 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City.

The meeting is open to the public.

Panoff's talk at HCC canceled; Kaplan to speak

A talk by Rabbi Mark J. Panoff of Temple Isaiah, scheduled for tomorrow at Howard Community College, has been canceled.

Instead, Rabbi Shmuel Kaplan, director of Chabad Lubavitch of Maryland, will speak about "Chassidism and Modernity: The Parallel Development of Chassidism and the Modern Age."

Kaplan will speak from 12:20 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in multipurpose Room 100 of the college's Instructional Lab Building, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

The program is part of the Jewish Student Union's "Lunch and Learn" series. A light lunch will be served. Admission is free.
