Elizabeth Kissick designs fun, feminine and flirty jewelry that sparkles with color and meaning. Using sterling silver, Austrian crystals and hand-blown glass beads, she crafts charming charm bracelets, chokers and earrings that suit big occasions such as getting married, graduating from school or having a baby. They are perfect for no reason at all, too.

We love the Mother's bracelets ($100), which pair crystals with silver charms of sand pails and ballerinas and can be customized with the names of your children. For a teen-age daughter, the pearl and silver Trust bracelet ($110) that comes with the charm of a telephone serves as a pretty reminder that Mom and Dad can always be contacted for a ride home, no questions asked. For a little funk, her Just for Fun bracelets feature wild zebra-striped beads, bright colors and bold design. We especially like the Pink Zebra bracelet ($110) with its hot pink and green beads that look so pretty with a Lilly shift.

Kissick, who lived in Baltimore for a time but now is based in Cohasset, Mass., also does jewelry with spiritual messages, jewelry for such causes as AIDS and breast cancer, and jewelry for wedding parties. Many of her items can be customized.

Her ek designs jewelry is available at Smyth Jewelers in Timonium, Amaryllis in Harborplace and Zachary's in Annapolis. For more information, go to www. ekdesignsJewelry.com or call 781-383-6878.

Masking the problem

Don't just slap on that facial mask and expect miracles. You have to use those things right, according to the people at Astara Conscious Skin Care, makers of high-quality skincare products favored by the spa set. Applying a mask properly ensures that you get all of the benefits that it provides. And using a mask with the right kind of ingredients for your problem is critical, too.

For example, to combat blotchiness and red, irritated skin: Apply Astara Golden Flame Hydration mask, which contains cucumber extracts, to face and neck and leave on for 20 minutes or longer before rinsing and gently patting dry. Acne masks go on the T-zone, not the whole face. And masks for sunburn should be rinsed off immediately.

Astara products are available at Sephora stores, Joie de Vivre in Pikesville. Visit www.astaraskincare.com or call 1-877-427-8272 for more information.

Scent of the tropics

We're all for fruity drinks with little paper parasols and mid-winter vacations to tropical places, but both options seem less than possible for us right now. At least there's Escada's Island Kiss.

The fragrance is all about tropical fruits like mango, passion fruit and orange, add in some passionate-smelling magnolia and white peach and finish up with dash of musk and hibiscus. Mmmm. Smells like vacation in the tropics.

Escada Island Kiss costs $48 for 50 ml or $68 for 100 ml and is available at Nordstrom and Sephora stores.
