House debate on school funds reset for today

General Assembly

February 12, 2004

A much-anticipated House of Delegates debate over alterations to a $1.3 billion-a-year public school funding law was postponed until today.

The debate was supposed to take place yesterday, but House Republicans asked for the delay, saying they wanted more time to prepare amendments.

Backed by Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., Republicans are opposing a bill that would circumvent the need for a legislative vote next month affirming that the state has the money to pay for the plan. The attorney general's office has ruled that such a vote is likely unconstitutional, but Ehrlich said it should happen anyway as a demonstration of fiscal responsibility.
