Stephen Allen Markey Jr., 70, partner in law firm

Stephen Allen Markey Jr., a partner in a Greenbelt law firm and active church member, died of pneumonia Friday at Laurel Regional Hospital. He was 70 and lived in West Laurel.

Mr. Markey was born and raised in New Bedford, Mass. He earned a bachelor's degree from Stonehill College in Easton, Mass. From 1955 to 1957, he served with the Army's 84th Engineering Battalion in California.

He moved to Baltimore in 1960 and earned a law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1968.

In 1971, he began practicing general law with the firm of Couch, Blackwell and Miller in Greenbelt, eventually becoming a partner.

Mr. Markey was a member of the Patuxent Council of the Knights of Columbus, Antonio Gatto Lodge of the Sons of Italy and the Massachusetts Society of the District of Columbia.

He was an active communicant of St. Mary of the Mills Roman Catholic Church in Laurel, where a Mass of Christian burial was offered Tuesday.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Mary Filippetti; a son, Stephen A. Markey III of Bel Air; four daughters, Lisa Zolga of Raynham, Mass., and Catherine Gentilucci, Deborah Wilkinson and Christina Gregory, all of Laurel; a brother, John Markey of Mattapoisett, Mass.; six sisters, Ann Barlow, Ellen Kelly, Mary Longo and Elizabeth Shaughnessy, all of New Bedford, Winifred Winslow of West Yarmouth, Mass., and Alice Callaghan of Mattapoisett; and 14 grandchildren.
