Helen Taustin, 94, worked for candy store chain

Helen Taustin, retired office manager for a chain of Ocean City-based candy stores, died of Alzheimer's disease Thursday at the Berlin Nursing Home. The Ocean City resident was 94.

Born and raised in New York City, she moved to Baltimore in the late 1940s and worked with her brother, Sam Taustin, at the old Pixie Shoppes pizza and submarine sandwich carryout on Greenmount Avenue. She was also involved in management of the Pappy's Beef and Beer chain.

Miss Taustin spent part of the year in Ocean City, where she was office manager for Candy Kitchen and managed her family's nightclub, the old Blue Dahlia at Ninth Street and the Boardwalk. She worked with family members at the old Chick `n Ribs Restaurant, later called the Embers.

Miss Taustin traveled extensively.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews, including Jay Taustin of Ocean City. She was married briefly during World War II.

Graveside services were held Sunday at Beth Israel Cemetery in Salisbury.
